Catalog Description:
Demonstration of fundamental signal processing
techniques using software packages. Various analog and digital
modulation schemes.

Goals:
Showing the analog/digital modulation and signal processing techniques,
through the experiments by using LabView software and certain hardware
experiment kits to seniors majoring in communications.
Learning
Objectives:
At
the end of this course, students will be able to:

communication
circuit experiments by using LabView software.

the effects of changing some parameters of an analog or digital
communication circuit or system.

Understand
the
difference between the real life problems in communication circuits and
theoretical studies.

communication experiment using hardware and software.

Course
Structure: This course is a 1-credit Lab.
course. Most of the experiments will be performed by using Lab-View
software tools, which is available on the PC’s in the Lab. Students,
may get their copy of the software to study at home. Students are
supposed to design the experimental set-ups by using the standard
“virtual instrument”s of the software and given modules. In addition
to the soft experiments some of the experiments will be performed on the
real hardware.Each student will prepare a
Lab. Report for each topic. The student will present his/her solution to
the problem, printouts of the numeric results, waveforms, diagrams etc.
in the report. The reports
should be submitted the next period of Lab.

Computer Resources: PC’s (with LabView
software installed) in the Communications Lab.
Laboratory Resources: AM/FM, PCM/TDM experiment
kits and standard measuring instruments in the Telecommunications Lab.
Outcome Coverage:
-
An ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science and engineering.
Students should use the basic signals, systems and telecommunication
theory to interpret the outcomes of the experiments.

An ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and
interpret data. During the lab. sections, students learn how to
implement a given circuit by using LabView virtual instruments, how to
measure the different quantities and how to interpret the outcomes. Each
student should perform 10 experiments and prepare reports. The
interpretation of the results should be given in the reports.

ability to design a system,
component, or process to meet desired needs.
Each student will design a soft experiment, as a term project.
The instructor will give the specifications of the circuit or system to
be designed.

ability to communicate
effectively. Each
student should prepare lab. reports and presents his/her term project
experiment. So, students learn how to prepare official reports how to
demonstrate an experiment.

An
ability to use the
techniques, skills and modern engineering tools necessary for
engineering practice.
The students learn the structure and usage of one of the most common
modern graphical software: LabView. They also use modern laboratory
equipment, during hardware experiments (such as spectrum analyzers and
oscilloscopes) and use computers for report writing.
