Born in Karsiyaka, Izmir on 02/29/1956, he obtained his B.S. in electrical engineering from Middle East Technical University in Ankara, Turkey. He received his M.S.E.E. degree in 1980, his M.S. in Applied Mathematics degree in 1984 and his Ph.D. degree in Eectrical Engineering in 1985, all from Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia. After holding a post-doctoral research position at Georgia Tech. for a year, he joined the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering of Bogaziçi University, where he is currently a professor in the broad area of circuits and systems.

His main interest lies in mathematical system theory. His main contribution to the literature has been in formulation and characterization of the structural properties of singular systems and in parametrization of their orbits under the action of generalized feedback group. His recent work focuses on: (i)- classification of the orbits of weakly prime systems under the action of similarity transformations and application of this classification to the problems of pole assignment and stabilization by constant output feedback in linear systems, (ii)- robust Schur stability against structured perturbations, (iii)- H-infinity optimal control of a guided missile, and (iv)- partial disturbance rejection with an H-infinity norm bound.
